Smith began his career at his home town club Leeds. He has tended to make an impact in most things he has achieved as a player. Scoring with his first touch of his Leeds debut, aged just 18, against Liverpool in front of the Kop at Anfield was simply an early indication of that. Smith has been capped at England level, making his international debut on 25 May 2001 in a 4 0 win over Mexico. His first international goal came in a 1 1 draw with Portugal in September 2002.
